Traverse City Beaches Closed Because Of Sewage Overflow

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - Traverse City officials have closed several beaches as a precaution after a sewer overflow sent more than 3,000 gallons of untreated sewage down a street and possibly into West Grand Traverse Bay.

City Director of Public Services Dave Green told the Traverse City Record-Eagle that debris blocked a sewage pipe, causing the sewage to flow down a roadway and into Kids Creek area before city employees could clear the blockage.

City officials warned beach goers against any contact with the water at Clinch, Sunset and Bryant park beaches until further notice and also closed the Traverse City Senior Center Beach and Kids Creek.

The beach areas will remain under the advisory until county officials can test the water for E. coli on Monday.
