Judge: Courser Will Move To Trial, Gamrat Charges Dismissed
LANSING (WWJ) - A Lansing judge has ruled that former Michigan Rep. Todd Courser will face trial on perjury and misconduct charges. The judge, however, dismissed the charges against State Rep. Cindy Gamrat.
The two have been embroiled in controversy since the media caught wind of their extramarital affair. Both have since been forced out of office.
In a recording uncovered last August, Courser said he wanted his 25-year-old office worker to send an email about himself to Republican operatives, alleging that he had been caught having sex with a male prostitute behind a Lansing nightclub.
Courser said on the recording that the email was designed to create "a complete smear campaign" of exaggerated, false claims about him so when his alleged affair with Gamrat, came to light, it would seem "mild by comparison," according to the newspaper report.
Courser has admitted to devising an explicit e-mail that said he had been caught having sex with a male prostitute behind a nightclub in Lansing. It was apparently an attempt by Courser to make his real affair with Gamrat less plausible.
