2 Men Wanted In $4,000 Scam Targeting Elderly In Oakland County [VIDEO]

WATERFORD TWP. (WWJ) - Police are looking for help to identify two suspects wanted in an appalling scam targeting the elderly in Oakland County.

A 86-year-old woman told police she was working in her yard when two unknown men approached her and just started spraying a sealant on her driveway, the afternoon of Thursday, May 26, in the 100-block of Draper in Waterford Township.

While one was spraying, the woman told police, the other man stated that he had extra sealant and could complete her entire driveway for $58. The woman told the man she wasn't interested, but she felt intimidated so she allowed them to continue — thinking she would pay them the $58 to get them to leave.

When the work was completed the suspects instead demanded $4,000, claiming they'd used 78 gallons of sealant, the woman told police.

She said she didn't have the money and asked if they would take a credit card, police said. But the suspects demanded cash, then driving the victim to a credit union where one of them was caught on security camera helping the woman out of a vehicle.

The victim said she withdrew the money and paid the men, telling investigators that it was half of her life savings.

Investigators are now asking for the public's assistance in identifying these suspects or the vehicle seen in the security video.

Anyone with information is asked to call Waterford Police Det. Keith Zoltowski at 248-618-6126; or, to stay anonymous, contact the tip line at 248-674-COPS.
