Slow Go: 2 Hour Wait To Cross Ambassador Bridge Into Canada
DETROIT (WWJ) - Tempers are flaring at the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit where truckers are stuck in a huge backup waiting to get into Canada.
The average wait time Friday morning for commercial traffic was roughly two hours.
One trucker was showing his obvious frustration at the situation by blaring his horn, non-stop.
Cam Annable, who uses the crossing daily, said the wait at the bridge is getting ridiculous.
"It's too long. They need to get this straightened out, as you can hear," Annable said, laughing at the horn in the background. "I think everybody needs to team up and say enough is enough."
Ken Bolt was among those caught in the backup.
"It's just the amount of trucks going back into Canada," he said. "It's just too many trucks and not enough room on the bridge."
Only four Customs booths were open earlier Friday but as of 7 a.m., seven booths were open.
Detroit International Bridge Company's Randy Spader, who manages the Ambassador Bridge, told WWJ's Mike Campbell the delay is partly a problem with manpower.
"It's like a funnel, right? You can only put so much water in and the hole at the bottom is only a certain size. So if the hole at the bottom doesn't open up big enough, I can't push anymore through," he said. "But we're going to continue to work with CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) and try to get this cleaned up as quick as possible, and also continue meetings with them that we have had recently to find out what we can to do kind of prevent this stuff from happening."
While commercial traffic is being held up at the crossing, there's no reported delay for normal travelers.
