Detroit Man Charged After Police Officer Shot In Hand During Struggle
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A 29-year-old man has been charged with felonious assault after a Detroit police officer was shot in the hand while trying to arrest him.
The Wayne County prosecutor's office says Donald Lee Simmons of Detroit also is charged with one count each of resisting and obstructing police causing injury, being a felon in possession of a firearm and using a firearm during a felony.
According to prosecutors, two officers chased Simmons late Saturday night after seeing a gun in his waistband in the 15800 block of Prairie in northwest Detroit.
Prosecutors say, during a struggle with officers, Simmons pulled the gun from his pants and fired, striking one of the cops in the hand. Simmons also shot himself in the hand during the struggle.
Another officer at the scene was able to handcuff Simmons, but he got away again on foot. When police caught up, prosecutors say, there was another struggle — but Simmons was eventually placed under arrest without further shots fired.
The officer and Simmons were treated for their gunshot wounds at area hospitals.
Bond for Simmons was set at $250,000 cash or surety at an arraigmentin 36th District Court Monday afternoon.
A probable cause conference was set for next Wednesday, June 29, and a preliminary examination was also scheduled for July 5.
