Mariners Starter Leaves Before Throwing Official Pitch

DETROIT (AP) — Seattle Mariners scheduled starter Adrian Sampson has left Thursday's game against the Detroit Tigers before throwing an official pitch.

It was supposed to be the right-hander's second major league start. But after coming to the mound and making a warmup pitch, catcher Chris Iannetta signaled to the dugout and Sampson came out.

Manager Scott Servais summoned Vidal Nuno from the bullpen.

Since Sampson didn't throw an actual pitch to a batter, Nuno will be the starter of record, according to the official scorer.

Sampson will appear in the box score in the pitcher's spot in the order, despite not pitching in the game.

According to the Mariners, Sampson left the game with right elbow discomfort and will undergo further evaluation.
