Groundbreaking Set For New Detroit 8th Police Precinct Building In Northwest Detroit

DETROIT (AP) — A groundbreaking for a new police precinct building is scheduled in northwestern Detroit.

Mayor Mike Duggan, Police Chief James Craig and City Council President Brenda Jones are expected to attend the Tuesday afternoon ceremony on West McNichols for the new 8th Precinct.

The city says in a release it's moving away from districts where precinct operations were combined. The 8th Precinct had been merged with the city's 6th Precinct.

Police operations were divided under precincts until then-mayor Kwame Kilpatrick consolidated most into districts in 2005 to help balance the city's budget.

Detroit sold the former 8th Precinct station in 2007.
