Police Fatally Shoot Man Who Threatened Officers With Bat

COLUMBIA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say police fatally shot a man who threatened officers with a baseball bat in southern Michigan.

Columbia Township police Chief David Elwell tells the Jackson Citizen Patriot that one of his officers responded on Sunday to a home along with a Napoleon Township officer following a report of a domestic dispute. WILX-TV reports police had previously been called to the home.

The Jackson County sheriff's department is investigating and says 51-year-old Lenawee County resident Terry Lynn Maurer was killed.

Elwell says the man threatened officers with the bat before he was shot. He says the part-time Columbia Township officer who shot him is off the department's work schedule as the investigation continues. The county prosecutor's office is expected to review the case.
