Small Plane Crash Lands In Detroit Neighborhood

DETROIT (WWJ) - Two people were injured Monday night when a small plane was forced to make a crash landing in a Detroit neighborhood.

The plane became tangled in power lines as it made an emergency landing near the Coleman A. Young International Airport on the city's east side at near Cooper and Schumaker Streets at around 8:45 p.m.

The 18-year-old pilot was forced to make an emergency landing after the plane ran out of fuel. The plane collided with a power line on its way to the ground.

The pilot suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital to be evaluated. A nearby woman was shocked when she came in contact with a live wire while getting out of her vehicle and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

The plane was a fixed-wing, single engine Cessna registered in Ohio. It was a banner plane that was flying over the Detroit Fireworks.

The Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said the pilot reported engine failure. He said Tuesday he expects it will take a few weeks to investigate the crash.
