Detroit's First-Ever Hockeytown 5K Sells Out In Less Than A Month

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Red Wings say the first-ever Hockeytown 5K Run/Walk is sold out.

More than 6,000 registered racers representing 40 states will travel to Detroit for the Hockeytown 5K on Saturday, Sept. 10, taking place along the Detroit RiverWalk with the finish line positioned at center ice inside Joe Louis Arena.

Although the event is sold out, Red Wings fans around the world can still participate in the Hockeytown 5K by registering for the Virtual Race package, which currently includes participants from 26 states and three countries (U.S., Canada and Japan). For $55, those who register are encouraged to run the 3.1 miles on or around Saturday, Sept. 10, and the Red Wings will mail the race bib, Hockeytown 5K T-shirt and a Finisher's Medal to the participant. Registration for Virtual Race packages will close on Wednesday, Aug. 10.

The Hockeytown 5K will begin at the Gordie Howe Entrance and will proceed up Atwater Street to St. Aubin Street and back along the RiverWalk, finishing inside Joe Louis Arena at center ice. Current Red Wings players and alumni will be in attendance along the course and inside The Joe to cheer on participants throughout the experience.

Following the Hockeytown 5K, the Red Wings will host the "5K Festival" inside The Joe. The "5K Festival" will include appearances from past and present Red Wings to participate in autograph signings. Fans in attendance will also have an opportunity to play interactive games to test their hockey skills, take photos with championship and retired jersey banners, and win great Red Wings prizes.

Spectators are invited to cheer on their family and friends during the Hockeytown 5K for a suggested $5 donation to benefit the Detroit Red Wings Foundation upon entering Joe Louis Arena. Children under the age of 18 can enter The Joe for free. Spectators will also be welcomed into Joe Louis Arena to participate in the "5K Festival" activities. A portion of all proceeds from the Hockeytown 5K will benefit the Detroit Red Wings Foundation.

The Hockeytown 5K will mark the first of many events during the 2016-17 season celebrating the "Farewell Season at The Joe" as the Red Wings prepare to embark upon their final regular season at Joe Louis Arena. The campaign will celebrate many of the historic Red Wings games and entertainment acts that have been held at Joe Louis Arena in the building's illustrious 38-year history through championship and alumni celebrations, memorable giveaways, special entertainment performances and much more.
