Michigan Boosting Efforts To Curb Aquatic Invasive Species

LANSING (AP) -- Michigan officials are reaching out to boaters across the state as part of Aquatic Invasive Species Awareness Week.

The week begins Sunday and runs through July 9. Events are planned at more than 50 boat launches as part of efforts to curb non-native aquatic plants and animals. Officials note that invasive species can disrupt the natural ecosystem, tourism and the economy.

The week is highlighted by the third-annual AIS Landing Blitz. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is partnering with local volunteers as well as the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on the effort.

Many invasive species are easily spread by boaters and anglers using their equipment in multiple bodies of water without proper cleaning.
