Traffic Alert: Northbound I-275 To Shut Down On Tuesday

LIVONIA (WWJ) -- Construction is scheduled begin along I-275 northbound Tuesday after the morning rush hour, effectively closing the freeway from M-14 north to I-696 until mid-September.

MDOT's Diane Cross said the recent stretch of the dry weather helped construction crews finish work on the southbound side of the highway early.

"We've had great weather, who knows what we will have for the next few months and who knows should there be any other issues because you just don't know," Cross said. "There's so many pieces to this particular puzzle."

The target date for completion of re-construction on I-275 northbound is September 15.

"We'll start closing ramps first," Cross said. "Then, once all those ramps are closed, then the only traffic driving northbound is that [which] is already on the freeway then we'll shut it down at 96 and M-14. So that's expected to take a few hours."

The $75 million project includes replacing 88 lanes, miles of concrete pavement on I-275 from north of 5 Mile Road to the I-96/I-696/M-5 interchange, including all the ramps on "Mile" roads and at the I-96/I-696/M-5 interchange.

The project also includes shoulder work on I-275, concrete repairs on I-696, repairs on 16 bridges, drainage improvements, and intelligent transportation systems work.
