Child, 4 Others Injured By Fireworks In 30-Minute Span

YPSILANTI (WWJ) - Ambulance crews say they haven't had this many fireworks injuries in a long time.

On Monday night, five people including a child were taken to hospital emergency rooms as a result of accidents with fireworks. Joyce Williams, with Huron Valley Ambulance, said the injuries happened in a 30 minute span between 10 and 10:30 p.m.

Three people were taken to Beaumont-Trenton Hospital after mortar-type fireworks exploded in a field in the area of Ford Road and Jones Street in Carleton. Police Chief Roy Johnson said all three victims — a man and two women — were last reported in critical condition.

"One of the mortars was put into the tube and it did not launch, it exploded inside the tube and the shrapnel came out striking three adults, two males and one female," Johnson told WWJ's Laura Bonnell. "I do not know if the issue with the mortars exploding was user error or if it was an issue with the mortar itself."

Another person was injured when he or she was hit by fireworks along Martinsville Road in southwestern Wayne County.

And a young child was rushed to Mott's Children Hospital in critical condition after police say timed fireworks malfunctioned and exploded at a home on Ohio Street in Ypsilanti Township. Police said the boy's legs and groin area were burned.

Meantime in Detroit, a 2-year-old child was critically injured when shots rang out during a fireworks party on the east side. No arrests have been made in the case.
