1 Dead, 2 Injured After Boat Crashes Into Barge On Detroit River

DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities have recovered the body of a young man who fell overboard after a boat crashed into a barge on the Detroit River.

Dive teams with the US Coast Guard and Detroit Police pulled the man's body from the water near the Harbortown Marina entrance around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say the man, believed to be 18- or 19-years-old, was on a boat with two other people just before 11 p.m. Tuesday when they approached a barge near the Ambassador Bridge. Police say the boat tried to avoid striking the barge, but was unsuccessful.

The impact of the collision sent the man overboard. Police say he went under the water and never resurfaced.

The other two people were injured, but were able to call for help. Both received treatment at the scene for their injuries.

The man's name has not yet been released.

Multiple agencies are investigating the incident. Police say it appears to be an accidental drowning.
