Company Renewing Request For Coke Breeze Along Detroit River

DETROIT (AP) - A company plans to renew its request to store a coal-based byproduct called coke breeze and other materials along the Detroit River.

Waterfront Terminal Holdings on Tuesday is set to go before Detroit's Board of Zoning Appeals.
In its application, the company raised the possibility of petroleum coke, or "pet coke," which is a byproduct of petroleum refining. But Beth Gotthelf, an attorney for the company, tells The Detroit News there are no plans to store petroleum coke at the site.

Crain's Detroit Business on Sunday reported Waterfront's renewed plans.

The city in February denied Waterfront a permit, saying the company did not intend to enclose the materials within a structure or use containment tarps. Gotthelf says, however, that testing revealed products handled by the company didn't generate off-site dust.
