Michigan's U.P. Blasted By Wicked Weather

(WWJ) Metro Detroit has been been deluged with heat and humidity and flirting with rainfall for the few days. But it could be worse: In the Upper Peninsula, they got dumped on last night.

A flash flood warning was issued for Gogebic County in the U.P. last night, which includes the town of Negaunee. The sudden deluge washed out a guard rail and made driving treacherous, some reported.

Five inches of rain blew quickly through the area, many weather sources report.

Jo works at Ma's Place, a diner up in Wakefield, Mich., where the M-28 ends at U-S 2, and she says it's been wet early this summer. But last night brought it to a new level.

"Last night, well, they're saying it was a tornado," Jo reported to WWJ's Dave Ramos.

And if you're up there, stop by. Ma's Place is the place to be because the lights are on. Most of the places around them are still dark.

And the griddle's on, too, but she says that because of the rain that hit that area last night, the pickins' are slim where company is concerned.

"Yeah, you can tell it has kind of slowed it down a little bit (around there)," she said.

But Jo says don't let the rain stop you -- it's beautiful up there. Thunderstorms this morning are expected to turn into sunny skies later, with a lofty high of 87 degrees.

The storms should abate by the weekend, so grab a tent and check out Michigan's great peninsula. Before you go, stay up to the minute on weather HERE.
