Divers Recover Teen's Body From Livingston County Lake

HARTLAND TOWNSHIP (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say the body of an 18-year-old suburban Detroit man who jumped from a boat into a lake in Livingston County to swim has been found.

Divers recovered the body of Andrew Massey of Chesterfield Township about 25 to 30 feet from shore in Handy Lake following a 70-minute search Monday evening.

Massey was on a pontoon boat with a group of friends and cousins, ranging in age from 15 to 18, who were fishing, when he jumped in the water to cool off, according to Hartland Deerfield Fire Marshal Michael Bernardin.

"He was a very healthy and physically capable 18-year-old and was able to swim, that's my understanding," Bernardin told WWJ's Jason Scott. "It was just one of those instances where he jumped in and just never resurfaced. Nobody knows what happened, it just appears to be a freak accident."

Bernardin said Massey wasn't wearing a life jacket, which could have made all the difference.

"It's not just for young kids, it doesn't matter your age, just having that simple life vest on when out or around the water can prevent or at least deter tragedies such as this," he said.
