I-96 In Livingston County Reopens After Fatal 2 Truck Crash
HOWELL (WWJ) - A 39-year-old man was killed in a crash that had I-96 backed up for miles in Livingston County.
Authorities say the accident, involving two trucks, happened at around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday morning along westbound I-96, near Highland Road, in Howell Township.
According to a preliminary investigation by Michigan State Police, a 2016 Peterbilt semi truck and trailer — driven by a 25-year old woman from Springfield, Missouri — was traveling westbound on I-96 in the right lane when traffic slowed in front of her.
She was able to slow down, police said, but was rear-ended by a 1998 GMC box truck driven by an Owosso, Michigan, man.
The box truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
WWJ Traffic Reporter Lorna Stevens said all westbound lanes of I-96 were shut down by police at exit 137 for a crash investigation spanning several hours.
The freeway was reopened to traffic by 6 p.m.
Prior to the crash traffic was already jammed in that area due to road work along westbound I-96 between M-59 and Fowlerville Road.
The victim's name was not immediately released. Police said alcohol or drugs are not believed to have been a factor in the crash as an investigation continues.
