Murder Charge In Death Of 81-Year-Old Man Hit By Car In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - An alleged car thief has been charged with murder the hit-and-run death of an 81-year old man over the weekend.

Tywaun Tramel Coakley, 42, is accused of killing Roberto Ybarra at around 9:30 a.m. last Sunday.

According to Wayne County Prosecutor, Coakley stole a car along West Lafayette near Rosa Parks and then struck Ybarra, who was standing next to his own car in the 1600 block of West Lafayette.

Coakley did not stop after he hit the elderly man, but was caught and arrested on Howard St. a short time later.

WDIV-TV reports that Ybarra, a retired postal worker and military veteran, had been trying to break up a fight between Coakley and another man when he was struck. He was reportedly pinned against his vehicle and suffered several broken bones and a head injury.

He was arraigned in Detroit's 36th District Court on Wednesday on one count of felony murder, one count of manslaughter - motor vehicle, one count of failure to stop at accident resulting in death and one count of felonious assault.

He was remanded to jail pending a probable cause hearing set for Wednesday, July 27 before Judge Kenneth King. A preliminary exam date was also scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 2.
