"Star Trek Beyond" Leaves Something To Be Desired

DETROIT (WWJ) - "Star Trek Beyond," the much-anticipated and much-hyped new film in the Star Trek franchise, is now in theaters. Does it live up to expectations?

Sometimes, when a movie is constantly hyped to the max, it's hard to win unless, of course, to coin a popular phrase, "it comes out swinging." And unfortunately, "Star Trek Beyond" just doesn't come out swinging. That's mainly because the storyline leaves something to be desired.

Without giving the story away, for an experienced captain like James T. Kirk, I found it unbelievable that he didn't question what, in my mind, was a very shaky story from an unfamiliar source. And neither did his Star Fleet commander. I can think of several ways that scene could have been rewritten which would have made the story more believable.

When a movie gets off on shaky ground, so to speak, it's hard to recover. Although this movie did redeem itself about halfway through, the wait was entirely too long. While there were plenty of battles and gunfights, the brightest part of the movie and the biggest surprise came in the form of Sofia Boutella, starring as Jaylah. She's one woman you wouldn't want to mess with!

Diehard "Star Trek" fans will, undoubtedly, trek to movie theaters this weekend to check out this latest installment. However, this particular film is worth waiting for – if you know what I mean.

See you at the movies!
