Ex-Postal Worker Sentenced For Opening Mail From Route

GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ/AP) - A former western Michigan postal employee has been sentenced to two months in prison for opening mail belonging to other people.

Samantha Rose Gentz, 24, learned her punishment earlier this week in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids, WZZM-TV reported. She pleaded guilty in March to a charge of unlawfully opening mail from the route she worked in Muskegon County.

She also was ordered to serve 18 months of probation and pay $250 in restitution. Her lawyer says she's extremely remorseful.

Court records say Gentz came under scrutiny after postal officials began getting complaints about missing packages. Court records say she admitted opening about 15 letters in 2015. As part of a plea agreement, she won't face charges in the reported theft of a pain medication from the mail.
