Authorities: 7-Year-Old Boy May Have Died Trying To Help Struggling Swimmer

CHESTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a 7-year-old boy has died while swimming in a lake in western Michigan while on a church group outing.

The Ottawa County sheriff's department says a dive team found the child in Crockery Lake in Chester Township on Sunday evening and he was pronounced dead in an ambulance. The boy's name wasn't immediately released.

Authorities say the child was in a swimming area at Grose Park with an 11-year-old boy when the older child started struggling. They say the younger boy tried to help the older boy, but the 7-year-old didn't make it back to land.

Crews searched for more than an hour before finding the missing boy.
