State Police Rescue Goldendoodle Dog After US-23 Rollover Crash

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - A lucky little dog has been reunited with her family after she was rescued from a rollover crash near Ann Arbor.

Michigan State Police with the Brighton post responded to the one-car accident along US-23 near M-14, at around 5:15 a.m. on Monday.

According to a preliminary investigation, a 2002 Oldsmobile driven by 59-year-old Maureen Wicker of Okemos was headed southbound on the freeway when the car left the roadway and rolled over.

Police said Wicker was taken by EMS to University of Michigan Hospital for treatment what were described as serious, but non-life threatening injuries. No other vehicles were involved and no one else was hurt.

While investigating at the scene, troopers found a pet carrier containing a small dog — later identified as a Goldendoodle named Stella  — in the crashed vehicle.

Rather than taking the dog to a kennel, Trooper McIntosh brought the pooch back to the Brighton post for safe keeping while police tried to contact Wicker's family.

The dog was quickly adopted by Post personnel, according to a MSP release.

Troopers joked: "Stella was recruited for patrol duty but was found taking a nap on the secretary's desk."

Police got in touch with Wicker's family later in the day and Stella was picked up by loved ones who were on their way to check on Wicker at the hospital.

An investigation into the crash itself is ongoing.
