Man Charged In Crash That Seriously Injured 2 Bicyclists In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit man has been charged nearly a month after he crashed into a group of bicyclists on Detroit's west side.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Tuesday that 30-year-old Lamar Pierre Odom faces two counts of driving with license suspended causing injury and two counts of moving violation causing injury in connection with the June 29 incident.

According to investigators, Odom was speeding in his Pontiac Grand Prix, at around 11 a.m., when he illegally passed a car on the right at the intersection of Parkside and West McNichols. When Odom tried to stop to avoid hitting a minivan, he lost control and slid about 55 feet.

That's when prosecutors say he struck one of eight people traveling as part of a Belle Isle cycling group — then going up the retaining wall, trapping a second bicyclist. Both victims, described only as a man and a woman, were taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Bond for Odom was set at $250,000/10 percent at an arraignment in 36th District Court Tuesday morning.

He will be back in court for a probable cause hearing before Judge Shannon Holmes on Tuesday, Aug. 2, following by a preliminary exam set for Monday, Aug. 8.
