State Trooper And Dog Attacked By Hornets, Stung More Than 20 Times

PITTSFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - A Michigan State Police trooper and his K9 partner are doing OK after they were attacked by a swarm of hornets in Washtenaw County.

Sgt. Mark Thompson with the MSP Brighton Post said a K9 unit was called in to track a suspect who had run away from a traffic stop, Monday afternoon, in Pittsfield Township.

The pair ran into some trouble when they entered a wooded area near Carpenter road.

"During the track they came upon what ended up being a hornets' nest and they were stung — the trooper and the dog were stung multiple times until they could exit the area," Thompson told WWJ's Sandra McNeill.

"It's my information that they were stung in excess of 20 times."

The trooper, identified as Jeffery Schreiber, was taken by EMS from the scene and both he and the dog were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Thompson said they have both since been released from care and cleared to go back to work.

MLive reported that other troopers with tracking dogs were able to locate and arrest the suspect, described as a parole absconder.

No details about the suspect have been released.
