Man Accused Of Stealing $5,000 In Swimsuits, Goggles Arrested In Police Sting

BLOOMFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - Authorities say a man caught on camera stealing a $5,000 shipment of swim gear from an Oakland County sporting goods store was apprehended after he tried selling the items online.

The theft occurred on July 15 at Bloomfield Sports Shop, on Maple and Lahser roads Bloomfield Township. The business owner told police that earlier in the day, UPS dropped off four boxes of high-end competitive swimsuits and goggles outside the store, valued at nearly $5,000.

Before the owner could collect the delivery, a heavy-set black male was caught on security cameras loading the boxes into a white pickup truck and leaving the area.

Detectives investigating the incident discovered that 50-year-old Kenneth Beverly, of Warren, was attempting to sell the swimsuits through an online sales site. At that point, the detectives called Beverly and set up a deal to purchase several of the suits.

With the assistance of Troy police, Bloomfield Township police arrested Beverly after he attempted to sell the suits to an undercover officer. A search of Beverly's apartment revealed the remainder of the stolen items, according to police.

Beverly was arraigned on July 28 on a felony charge of larceny - greater than $1,000 but less than $20,000. He remains lodged at the Oakland County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
