Group Starts New Effort For Required Sick Time In Michigan

LANSING (AP) - A group has launched a new attempt to require Michigan employers to provide paid sick time.

The Board of State Canvassers on Monday approved proposed ballot wording submitted by Raise Michigan to create the "Earned Sick Time Act."

The Detroit Free Press reports the group must collect more than 250,000 valid signatures to send the proposed legislation to the Legislature. If lawmakers rejected the legislation or didn't act, the question would go on the November 2018 ballot.

An earlier petition drive for November 2016 fell short.

MLive.com reports employees would earn one hour of sick time for every 30 hours worked. Employees of larger businesses would be able to use up to 72 hours each year and employees of small businesses would normally be restricted to up to 40 hours.
