Tri-County Voters Support Renewal Of Detroit Zoo Tax

ROYAL OAK (AP) - Voters in Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties have decided to renew a special property tax to help fund operations at the Detroit Zoo.

Ron Kagan, executive director of the Detroit Zoological Society, told The Detroit News on Tuesday night that the zoo is "very appreciative to the public which continues to vote — not only with their feet by visiting the zoo but also with their ballots."

Unofficial returns showed the renewal was approved in all three counties.

Voters on Tuesday were asked to renew a 0.1-mill tax for 10 years. For a homeowner whose home is worth $200,000, the cost is $10 a year. The tax was initially passed in 2008 to support the zoo in Royal Oak. Money is used for zoo operations and maintenance.
