Van Full Of Michigan Teens Flips Over On Way Home From Cedar Point; Sleepy Driver Tried To 'Swap Seats'

TOLEDO (WWJ) - Authorities say a van full of teenagers was headed home to Michigan after a day at Cedar Point when the driver attempted to "swap seats" with a passenger and the vehicle flipped over, injuring everyone on board.

The accident happened around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday on northbound I-75 near mile marker 198, between Buck and Wales roads just outside of Toledo.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. John Banta said a group of 10 teens was heading back to the metro Detroit area in a 2003 Chevrolet Express Van after spending the day at Cedar Point, in Sandusky, Ohio.

"Apparently the driver felt that she was getting sleepy and for one reason or another, decided to attempt to swap seats with the front passenger as the vehicle was still in motion," Banta told WWJ's Scott Ryan. "While doing so, it caused the vehicle to lose control and it ended up going off the left side of the road into the median, overturning several times, and two of the 10 occupants were ejected."

All 10 teens were transported to the hospital. The two who were ejected -- the front seat passenger and a back seat passenger, both 16-year-old females -- were last reported in critical condition. Another teen was reported in serious condition, while the seven others are said to have minor injuries.

Banta said the teens appear to be related, and range in age from 15 to 17. They're from Brighton and Howell.

The crash remains under investigation.

I-75 was closed for several hours while police investigated the scene, but has since reopened.
