Police: Man Struck By Amtrak Train In Royal Oak Was Filming Along Tracks

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - Police say a man who was struck by an Amtrak train in Royal Oak was filming a freight train along a different set of tracks when the collision occurred.

The incident happened around 1:20 a.m. Saturday at the railroad crossing on S. Washington and Sherman Drive, just north of 4th Street.

Police responded to the scene after receiving a 911 call about a pedestrian struck by a train and found the 27-year-old man unconscious.

According to police, the man disregarded the activated warning signals and lowered crossing arm to film a northbound freight train travelling on the east set of tracks.

"While standing on the west set of tracks, he was struck from behind by an approaching Amtrak train," police said in a statement. "Witnesses reported the train conductor was sounding the horn and the crossing signals were active and working properly when the accident occurred."

The victim was released from the hospital after receiving treatment for his injuries and is expected to fully recover. He was ticketed for disregarding the railroad crossing signal.

Officials say it's unknown at this time whether alcohol was a factor in the incident, which was investigated by several agencies including the CN Railroad Police.
