Sports Anchor, Former Bronco John Saunders Dead At 61

DETROIT (WWJ) - John Saunders, the sports anchor who was a fixture on ESPN programming for 30 years, has died. In his early years, Saunders was a hockey star at Western Michigan University.

Reaction from colleagues was fast to fill social media when news of his death was revealed.

Bronco's Athletic Director Kathy Beauregard fondly remembers his trips back to Kalamazoo.

"He was a very proud individual ... had an incredible career but one thing he never did, he never forgot where he came from," said Beauregard.

She says Saunders never missed an opportunity to connect with voice his Bronco roots, "he was extremely proud, of anytime, on air, or anytime Western Michigan was mentioned -- whether it was football game, bowl game, or basketball and he was involved, he was very proud to admit that he was from Western Michigan and proud of the blue and gold.

John Saunders was 61 years old - the cause of death was not disclosed.
