Accused Purse-Snatching, Cell Phone-Grabbing Crooks Arrested In Dearborn

DEARBORN (WWJ) - Two men accused of snatching purses and cell phones from unsuspecting victims in Dearborn are now facing multiple charges.

Devaunte McKinney, 22, and Darion McNair, 18, were arraigned this week on four counts of unarmed robbery, larceny from a person, and possession of a stolen vehicle. Bond was set at $100,000 for both.

Police say McKinney and McNair are responsible for at least five unarmed robberies and larcenies that took place between July 31 and August 7. In every instance, police say the pair stole purses and cell phones from the unsuspecting victims.

With the assistance of the victims and witnesses, police were able to establish a description of the suspects' vehicle -- which, as it turns out, had been stolen days before the crime spree began.

On August 8 while monitoring an area where the crimes had occurred, police located the suspect vehicle which subsequently led to McKinney's and McNair's arrest.

Police say both suspect also have charges pending in Novi and  Livonia for similar crimes.

"Crime prevention is a collaborative effort with the police and our community. These suspects were responsible for numerous larcenies and unarmed robberies in Dearborn, Detroit, Livonia, and Novi and I thank the witnesses and victims for cooperating with this investigation," Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said in a statement. "I urge citizens to constantly be aware of their surroundings and report suspicious activity to the police immediately."

Both McKinney and McNair are due back in court for a probable cause conference on Aug. 19, with a preliminary exam set for Aug. 27.
