NOVI (WWJ) -- A woman was charged Monday in the fatal shooting of her boyfriend at an apartment complex in Wixom last week.

Laricca Mathews, 37, was arraigned on felony charges of open murder and felony firearm, and faces up to life in prison.

Wixom police arrested Mathews at the Meadowood Park apartment complex at Sprucewood Dr. near 12 Mile and Wixom Road on August 12 after she allegedly shot her boyfriend, 21-year-old Gabriel Dumas, in the head. Dumas died a short time after at a local hospital.

One neighbor talking to WWJ's Jon Hewett said she heard a scuffle inside another unit through the apartment walls.

"It woke me up. It was like a whole wall came down, because we have a wall in between our apartments," said the woman, who declined to give her name. "It just kept getting louder and louder…there was a big bang. So I called my neighbor upstairs to see if she was OK or if she had an emergency or something."

"She didn't pick up the phone — so I rushed out of the door, and the paramedics came and were like, 'Get inside. Lock your door. Get inside, lock your door!'"

Police say two young children -- a boy and a girl -- witnessed the incident. They have been returned safely to their mother.

Mathews is being held without bond at the Oakland County Jail.
