Plans For Housing At Former Tiger Stadium Site Move Forward

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Plans are moving forward for housing and retail space at the former site of Detroit's Tiger Stadium as part of a broader redevelopment project.

Eric Larson, president and CEO of Larson Realty, tells The Detroit News the $35 million "The Corner" project should break ground by early 2017 and take about 16 months. Roughly 105 apartments and 35 townhouses are planned.

"The community has been unbelievably supportive of our activities and the way that we're approaching the development," Larson told the newspaper. "Our experience in Corktown has been just fantastic."

Construction officially started in June at the site, which is being redeveloped into a youth sports facility and Detroit Police Athletic League headquarters. A new $20 million, 2,500-seat stadium will be named for hometown sports hero Willie Horton.

Tiger Stadium opened in 1912 as Navin Field. The Tigers left for Comerica Park after the 1999 season and the last portion of the old ballpark was demolished in 2009.
