Woman Killed In Crash On Woodward Following Drag Racing Event

PONTIAC (WWJ) -- A woman was killed in crash on Woodward Avenue after she and her husband left a drag racing event in Pontiac on Friday night.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Department said the couple from Kent, Ohio had just left the "Roadkill Nights" drag race event, where the husband was a finalist.

Just before 10 p.m., the 68-year-old woman passenger was killed when the couple's vehicle, a Dodge Challenger SRT, was broadsided by a 2014 Chevrolet Impala along Woodward, south of Huron St.

Police say the Challenger was driving west on Huron and the driver attempted to make a left turn onto southbound Woodward.

The Impala -- being driven by a 55-year-old Fenton resident -- entered the intersection on a green light. The Challenger turned left in front of the Impala, which struck the Challenger broadside.

The woman was taken to McLaren-Oakland Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The two drivers were injured and checked on scene.

The crash did not happen on the drag racing course and was in no way related to the event. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor and all of those involved were wearing seat belts.

The incident remains under investigation.
