1 Suspect Wanted In Twelve Oaks Mall Robbery Turns Self In, Assaults Officers In Process [VIDEO]

NOVI (WWJ) - Authorities say one of the three suspects wanted in a smash-and-grab robbery at Twelve Oaks Mall over the weekend has turned himself in to police, but he didn't go very quietly.

Novi Police Detective Sgt. Scott Baetens said the 26-year-old suspect surrendered to Detroit police Monday night after his photo was released in the media.

"Apparently he had family members speaking to him and convinced him to voluntarily respond," Baetens told WWJ's Charlie Langton.

But when Novi officers went to pick the man up at Detroit's sixth precinct, he tried to escape, assaulted two officers and kicked out the back windows of the police cruiser.

After being placed into the car, the suspect starts to go "crazy," kicking out one of the rear windows.

"Shoot me! Shoot me, n****! Shoot me! Come on," he yells at the officers. "Step up! Step up!"

"What's your problem," one officer asks.

"Man, f*** you b****," the suspect responds. "Try me, I dare you."

The suspect then appears to calm down, if only momentarily, saying "You cool sergeant, f*** these n****s though."

"I'm done, man. Throw the book at me, man," the suspect says before kicking out the other rear window. "Throw the book at me! Kill me! You going to shoot me? Shoot me then n****! Shoot me, I dare you! But you ain't about that life, you about to kill me. Then kill me! F*** you, kill me! Blow my f****** brains out."

"No one's going to kill you," an officer yells at the suspect.

"OK then, n****. Shut the f*** up then," the suspect yells back.

After taking some time to calm down, the visibly exhausted suspect tells the officers "Don't put me on camera." Between deep breaths, he also asked for "some water."

The suspect remains in custody, and is expected to face additional charges relating to his arrest. Police say he could be arraigned as early as Tuesday afternoon.

Police are still searching for two additional suspects. Baetens said both men are believed to be Detroit residents.

"We are actively looking for you and are working with the Detroit Police Department, Wayne County and Oakland County," Baetens said. "We're coming for you."

According to police, the three men entered Tapper's Jewelry around 5:30 p.m. Saturday and smashed a display case with a small hammer. The suspects took two watches before fleeing the scene on foot.

The incident caused panic among shoppers, who reported hearing gunshots fired inside the mall as the robbery was occurring. Police later determined no shots were fired. The loud noise of the display case shattering and the slamming of the glass doors to the store as one suspect was trying to flee caused the immediate panic to shoppers, police said.
