Person Of Interest In Custody Following All-Night Police Standoff On Detroit's West Side

DETROIT (WWJ) - A person of interest is in custody after an all-night standoff at a west side Detroit home involving police, a gunman and a young child.

The situation unfolded early Wednesday morning at Kendall and Whitcomb, off Greenfield and Grand River Avenue, where a group of men were playing dice.

"There's some indication that there was some type of dice game taking place and someone was upset of the dice game, so then shots started being fired," Detroit Police Capt. Darrell Patterson told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "The police came and when the suspect saw the police, he started firing shots at the police officers," who returned fire.

Patterson said the suspect -- identified as 40-year-old Deangelo Davis -- dropped his AK-47 at the scene and then ran to a home in 13000 block of Sussex, near Greenfield and Schoolcraft, where he was thought to have barricaded himself inside. Several people were also inside the home, including a 4-year-old child.

Officers set up a perimeter and began negotiations. Eventually, nine people came out of the house but left the 4-year-old inside with Davis, according to police, because the child "was hard to wake up."

"I find that very odd," said Patterson. "The first thing I would have done was grab my child, so I don't know what the folks were thinking."

Patterson said the child eventually woke up and exited the house unharmed. At that point, officers made entry to the home -- but Davis was nowhere to be found.

It wasn't immediately clear how Davis was able to escape.

"We take all shootings serious but when someone actually shoots at the police, and you know that the police are armed, there's something wrong with that person. So, hopefully we can get this person off the streets as soon as possible," said Patterson. "He could have had an additional weapon. We don't know if he did or didn't but we're going to consider him armed and dangerous."

No injuries have been reported.

Later on in the day Detroit Police Chief James Craig said they had a "person of interest" in the case in custody, but fell short of calling the man a suspect.

An investigation is ongoing.
