Detroit Police Chief James Craig tells WXYZ-TV that Johnny Rodgers was caught Thursday in northwest Detroit.

Craig says Rodgers was under surveillance by state corrections personnel, who called city police to make the arrest.

Just after 5 p.m. the Michigan DOC announced that Rodgers was back in custody.

Rodgers was to be returned to the Corrections Department after appearing Wednesday in an Oakland County court. Instead, a jail officer released him.

He stopped briefly at his mother's home. She told authorities Wednesday night that Rodgers was released.

Rodgers was sentenced to at least seven years in prison last November after being convicted of attempted murder and other crimes in Wayne County. He was in an Oakland County court this week in a separate gun case.
