Second Man Arrested In Twelve Oaks Mall Robbery; 2 Suspects Still Sought

NOVI (WWJ) - A second suspect has been taken into custody in connection with a smash-and-grab robbery at an upscale jewelry store inside Twelve Oaks Mall.

Novi police say the 26-year-old Detroit man was arrested Wednesday with the assistance of the Michigan Department of Corrections. He's expected to face larceny and property damage charges.

Also on Wednesday, 26-year-old Jamal Ritter, of Detroit, was arraigned in 52-1 District Court on charges of retail fraud (5-year felony), malicious destruction of property (5-year felony) and larceny from a person (10-year felony). Ritter, who turned himself in on Monday, was ordered held on a $300,000 cash bond, and is due back in court on Aug. 31.

Police are still looking for two other suspects in connection with the August 20 robbery at Tapper's Jewelry -- one who was caught on security cameras, and the other who served as the getaway driver.

According to police, Ritter and two others entered the store around 5:30 p.m. and smashed a display case with a small hammer. The suspects took two watches before fleeing the scene on foot.

The incident caused panic among shoppers, who reported hearing gunshots fired inside the mall as the robbery was occurring. Police later determined no shots were fired. The loud noise of the display case shattering and the slamming of the glass doors to the store as one suspect was trying to flee caused the immediate panic to shoppers, police said.

Anyone with information regarding the remaining two suspects is urged to contact police at 248-348- 7100 or call Crime Stoppers anonymous  at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
