DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Lathrup Village man, who was registered as a sex offender, is facing child pornography charges.

A seven-page federal complaint accuses Mitchell Stankiewicz, 22, of producing and receiving child pornography and sending obscene material to a minor.

The investigation by the FBI's Trafficking and Exploitation Task Force started in July when a 14-year-old girl told her mother she was having an online sexual relationship with an unknown man.

The teen told police she sent photos of herself to someone on an app called Whisper. Details of the case show the girl and Stankiewicz traded explicit photos. According to the complaint, Stankiewicz went by the username Drowning Cactus.

A search warrant was executed at Stankiewicz's home Friday. A detention hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.

Stankiewicz is a tier 2 sex offender. He was charged in June 2015 for violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice article 120 (rape or sexual act under the age of 12), article 134 (possession of child pornography) and article 134 (R6) (bring discredit upon the armed forces).
