Group Seeking Voter Approval Of Regional Transit Plan

FERNDALE (AP) - Business leaders will join advocates for senior citizens and the disabled to announce an effort pushing for voter approval of a millage and regional transit plan for parts of southeastern Michigan.

Citizens for Connecting our Communities will be kicked off Thursday in Ferndale.

The group is seeking "yes" votes in the November general election for a master transit plan to create rapid transit lines and regional rail service in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties.

Organizers say reliable regional transit is essential for connecting communities, increasing independence for seniors and people with disabilities, getting people to work and boosting economic development.

The plan includes a millage to raise an estimated $3 billion. Another $1.7 billion would come from federal and state matching funds.
