The Snack Attack: New X-Menu At White Castle Is Loaded With Ghost Peppers [TASTE TEST]

White Castle is taking a walk on the spicy side and asking snackers, "How brave is your crave?"

The fast-food restaurant this week unveiled its new X-Menu, which features three sliders with fiery ghost pepper cheese, and loaded french fries. The limited time menu was introduced to help promote the DVD release of "X-Men: Apocalypse."

White Castle says these sliders were "designed to bring out everyone's inner super hero" and "aren't for the faint of heart." Now, I don't know if I'd go quite that far. Despite containing one of the hottest peppers known to man, these things aren't going to burn your mouth off, but they will leave a nice heat lingering on your taste buds.

The first thing I noticed about this slider is just how creamy the cheese was. It was melted to perfection! But I have to be honest, I was expecting the heat of ghost peppers to smack me in the face -- and that never happened. A slight heat developed after a few bites but by that time, I had pretty much eaten the whole thing.

Wow! That chipotle mayo definitely makes a difference. This slider was at least triple the spiciness compared to the first; still, not a ton of heat but enough that you can actually feel it. The onion chips added a nice crunchy texture and even a little sweetness, but what really gives this slider the edge is that mayo.

This is by far the best item on the X-Menu! It's so good I could literally eat one every day -- and I wouldn't limit it to breakfast, either. It's the perfect combination of savory, sweet and spicy. The waffle was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside with just the right amount of sweetness. And paired with that creamy ghost pepper cheese -- it's phenomenal; I had to stop myself from eating the cheesy waffle by itself. Then there's a fresh egg (which actually tastes like a real egg, not that liquid scrambled stuff) and a delicious chorizo sausage patty (which has the perfect spicy kick) -- it's pretty much a flawless combination. It is spicier than the first two, but honestly, it's hard to even compare this to the other sliders because the flavor profile is so much more dynamic.

This is the only item on the X-Menu that doesn't include ghost peppers. Why? Your guess is as good as mine. Even some of the chipotle mayo would have given these a nice kick but they were just kind of blah. Don't get me wrong -- they're still good, there's just really nothing special about them. The onion chips were soggy from all the cheese and barbecue sauce, and so were the fries. Despite being piled high with bacon, the chewy crumbles didn't really add any extra flavor. You'd be better off ordering cheese fries and dipping them in barbecue sauce on the side.
