Police: Man Charged In 3 Rapes May Be Responsible For 34 Crimes Across Metro Detroit

DEARBORN (WWJ) - A man who has already been charged with sexually assaulting three women in their homes is a suspect in 34 crimes across metro Detroit, according to police.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's office said Monday it's reviewing two warrant requests out of Allen Park involving alleged serial rapist and home invader Ikeie Ranordo Smith.

The 32-year-old Redford Township man was arrested last week in Dearborn and charged Friday in three crimes: a home invasion and sexual assault in Garden City and two of the same in Redford.

Along with additional homes invasions and sexual assaults, Michigan State police say Smith has been linked to attempted home invasions and "peeping Tom"-type crimes dating back to 2011 — totaling 34 cases.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy says she's awaiting additional warrant requests from several Detroit area cities, including Dearborn.

"From our standpoint, once they've completed their investigation and waiting for all the forensic, the tests — everything that should be put together in a well-oiled investigation like, this process has been — we'll make our charging decisions," Worthy said. "And judging from an investigation like this where there has been such a good and cooperative investigation, we can make it a lot sooner than we can in some cases when we have to have a lot more work done."

Police said Smith was caught thanks to help from the community.

"This person has run our region for a long time. He's a very dangerous individual and I'm grateful that we took him off the street," Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad told reporters at news conference Monday.

"...I want to tell our citizens and our community alike that there's no more power that he holds over the people and I can tell you that he'll be in jail for a long time."

Smith remains held without bond on charges of home invasion, criminal sexual conduct and armed robbery.

The FBI has been assisting local and state law enforcement with the ongoing investigation.
