Case Of Coney Dogs Causes Scare, Street Closures In Downtown Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) – What turned out to be a case of coney dogs caused quite a scare in downtown Detroit Monday.

Police blocked off traffic surrounding the scene outside the Detroit Federal Building, early in the afternoon, after a “suspicious package” was spotted on the sidewalk next to a lamppost near U.S. District on Lafayette Blvd.

People were being told to avoid the area.

It’s unclear at this time who left the package — described as a small rolling suitcase  — but it may simply have been someone’s lunch.

“Probably about two minutes ago, two Detroit police officers walked over to that bag and they looked inside,” WWJ’s Vickie Thomas reported from the scene, just after 1 p.m.

“This is what they told me: There were coney dogs in the bag.”

Police continued to block traffic on Lafayette from Cass Ave. to Shelby for an ongoing investigation, but people were being allowed to get by on the sidewalk after police opened the bag.

The U.S. Marshals Service later confirmed officers’ findings and the streets were reopened.

No one was hurt.

Terrorism must be working because we are becoming scared of our shadows. A real shame.
