OAK PARK (WWJ) – An Oak Park man has been arraigned on first degree murder in the fatal shooting of his 66-year-old wife and her 53-year-old sister.
Abdulwajid Akhenaton, 61, faces up to life if prison if convicted on two counts of first-degree murder. He’s also charged with possession of a firearm in commission of a felony.
Police say Akhenaton turned himself in following the shootings Wednesday evening that stemmed from a domestic dispute at a home in the 21000 block of Church Street, south of 9 Mile Road, in Oak Park. The couple’s adult daughter was able to escape unarmed.
Both sisters and Akhenaton lived in the home.
Akhenaton appeared briefly Friday in 45B District Court. Bond was denied and Akhenaton was remanded to jail.
He is due back in court for a probable cause hearing on Thursday, Sept. 29.
Oak Park City Manager Erik Tungate said these were the first two murders in the city in 2016.
