Parents Arraigned After Allegedly Dropping Dead Baby Off At Detroit Hospital

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Two Detroit parents have been charged after their deceased baby was dropped off at a hospital on the city's east side.

Lorenzo Brooks, 30, and Leticia Molton, 38, were arraigned on charges of involuntary manslaughter and second-degree child abuse.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Molton woke up and discovered the infant unresponsive before Brooks took the infant to St. John's Hospital just before 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

"There are babies in this county dying that should not be dying," Worthy said in a press release. "Unsafe sleep practices can be just as fatal to a baby as a gun or knife. The alleged actions of both parents in this case are criminal — they knew their alleged actions could result in the death of their child."

The couple's other child -- a 6-month-old daughter -- died in September 2014. The girl's cause of death was determined to be an airway obstruction due to an unsafe sleep environment, according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office.

Bond was set at $50,000 cash or surety. The two are expected back in court on Friday.
