Authorities Charge Canadian Woman In US Work Visa Scheme

DETROIT (AP) - A 37-year-old Canadian woman has been charged in federal court in Detroit in a scheme that used fake documents to try and obtain permanent U.S. residency for people living illegally in the United States.

Iram Jafri, of Windsor, Ontario, is named in a criminal complaint reports The Detroit News.

Authorities say the scheme included fraudulent paperwork created and solicited over the past five years to obtain work visas for individuals already living and working in the United States. They re-entered the U.S. from Windsor through Detroit and paperwork requesting non-immigrant professional visas was later submitted for some.

Court records say thousands of dollars were accepted as payment to an immigration consulting firm.

Defense attorney Ronald Walker told the newspaper he could not comment on the case's merits.
