Westland Man Arrested At Library Of Congress On Gun Charge

WASHINGTON (AP) - A Michigan man has been arrested after police say he brought a gun to the Library of Congress.

Police spokeswoman Eva Malecki said Friday that Bernard Brewer was arrested Thursday afternoon at a security screening checkpoint.

Malecki says Brewer has a concealed carry permit in his home state and volunteered that he had a gun at the checkpoint.

Brewer, 67, of Westland was charged with possession of an unregistered firearm. To carry a concealed weapon in the District of Columbia, Brewer would need to have a permit from the city.

Getting a permit requires a person to show a "good reason to fear injury" or "proper reason" to carry the weapon. The permit law is currently the subject of lawsuits.

Court records didn't list an attorney for Brewer.
