General Motors Adding 3rd Shift, 650 Jobs At Tennessee Plant

SPRING HILL, Tenn. (AP) - General Motors says it plans to hire 650 people at its Tennessee plant amid plans to introduce a third shift to boost production of the Cadillac XT5 and GMC Acadia.

The company said Tuesday that the new overnight shift is expected to begin in January and that the new positions will be filled through the end of the year.

The plant located about 30 miles south of Nashville employs about 3,300 hourly and salaried employees.

Vehicle production was halted at the facility for about two weeks this spring because of supply chain interruptions caused by earthquakes in Japan.

General Motors announced a $790 million investment at the facility in April to build a new high-efficiency engine and upgrade vehicle production, creating nearly 800 jobs.
