Police: Mom Left Baby In Kroger Parking Lot During Job Interview

TROY (WWJ) - A Detroit mom has lost custody of her baby after she left the child in her car in the parking lot of an Oakland County Kroger.

It happened shortly after noon Friday outside the grocery store on E. Long Lake Road in Troy.

According to Troy police, a Good Samaritan called 911 after spotting the 9-month-old infant sitting alone in a maroon 2007 Chevy Impala. The baby was "drenched in sweat" with the outside temperature at 75 degrees, police said in a report.

The witness told responding officers she had been with the child for about ten minutes before police arrived. Paramedics found the baby wasn't in need of medical treatment.

When the 26-year-old mother got back to her car, she explained she had an interview at Primary Eye Care, didn't have anyone to watch her child and was in desperate need of a job, police said.

She was issued a misdemeanor citation for child neglect and Child Protective Services was called in to investigate.

CPS recommended the baby not be turned back into the mother's care, according to police.  The baby's grandmother was contacted and arrived to take custody of the child.

The mother's name was not released.
